For one week in the spring of 2010 and again for a week in spring 2011 students took up residence in the windows of the Heal’s store on Tottenham Court Road to create original and limited edition artwork and installations as part of Artists in Residence 2010 and Artists in Residence 2011.
This inspirational design project of interactive windows was first launched to celebrate the 200 year centenary of Heals (Ambrose Heal had been an occasional student at the Slade). The project Artists in Residence was about linking with the art and design community which is of fundamental importance to the business and led to a number of exciting collaborations such as the exclusive ‘Heal’s Rules’ product range devised by the MA student Jeremy Hutchison, sold in-store and online from February 2011 and Gavin Weber’s use of an 1830s wood block printing press which he and other Slade students used to create wood cuts live over the seven days which were then printed and available to purchase.
