Azeri Aghayeva – BA/BFA
I’ve been saying that films are used by the government to distract us from our banal lives by exchanging them with the many emotionally charged, eventful ones on screen. I don't believe it, but I’ve found it’s a good way to cut a conversation dead, since I can't stand watching movies.
Over the lockdown I began eating up my own conspiracy to satiate my unfulfilled life that was squeezed dry by the hands of a pandemic. A cinematic lens has since entered my work. Objects have animated expressions, blurring lines between characters and props, flattened figures within a fish-bowl atmosphere collapse perspective, leopards are on leashes, the moon peers down at the ‘Hellton’ hotel, carpets have fallen in love with other carpets. My paintings take place within a room where everything is happening whilst the world looking in is frozen. All at once, everything exists and ceases to exist.
