Jose Guillermo Sarmiento – MA/MFA

Touch resembles the act of painting and in turn, painting rehearses touch. Painting is caressing, caring, embracing; it is a bodily apprenticeship in how to communicate with a surface and the heaviness or lightness of a group of materials, in my case it is viscous oil paint. In the act of painting, I aim to develop a relationship that starts with my body, its rational knowledge, and its unconscious behavior, and ends in the creation of a shared field of experiences. What begins as marks and gestures of color, ends in the creation of an image where I can re-imagine my place as a particular human in the world. Between desire and chance, in painting, I transform my particular identity into a tactile realm of feeling.
