Reo Jin Kim 김려진 – BA/BFA
Based in London and Seoul
I have been working on breaking the boundaries between painting and sculpture. My work is partially three-dimensional and flat. Most of the sculptures appear to be extruded from paintings, which questions the nature - possibly the gap - that painting and sculpture inevitably reveal in physical format.
Composition and form play a crucial role in my work. Inspired by photographing daily life in London and Seoul, selected photographic elements are arranged in various directions. This arrangement is simplified and reinterpreted through the process of painting and sculpture. It reveals structural aspects of the work and interest in figurative forms such as points, lines and planes.
The geometry interpreted from the perspective of my daily life is more complex when applied to painting and sculpture. Textures and materiality are either revealed or concealed through the subtle thickness of the painting, which suggests a way to map my thoughts and work in a two-and-a-half-dimensional perspective.
