Beatriz Santos – MA/MFA

My practice involves making paintings based on my own poetry, often depicting everyday subject matter infused with lyricism. I aim to capture the allusive nature of personal experience, and how memory combines the sensory with the psychological. I often use paper mâché frames, ornamental ceramic tiles, collage, found objects and mural trompe l’oeil devices to unpack themes of intimacy, humour, sadness and longing. By holding figuration and ornamentation in constant tension, I hope to question modes of looking inherent to Western art, particularly hierarchies of value and dichotomies inherent to Art History between inside and outside, rational space and irrational excess, manual craft and intellectual Art.
