Gabriele Ciulli – BA/BFA
My practice considers space as a scenario, a set of possibilities in which the encounter between the observer and the observed is put into question. Challenging both the rituals of exhibition-making and the canonical understanding of the performativity of an art object, my work attempts to challenge, through a paradoxical attitude, the assumptions regarding object commodity and the spectacularisation of visual information. I am interested in examining the potential of sculpture in this space of absurdity, focusing on systems of anti-anthropocentric expositions in which the art object becomes embedded into its scenario through acts of contingency and paradox. The process of finding, accessing, and activating these scenarios occurs on both the physical and virtual realm, often requiring acts of civil disobedience and forms of temporary architectural appropriation.
