We are committing to addressing systemic racism within the Slade through a series of actions and pledges to instigate fundamental and long-term changes to our staffing and curricula. Central to these changes is how we support our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic students and staff and those from marginalised communities.  

We have:

• Formed a Slade Anti-racist Action Group (SAAG) to drive forward the agenda of racial equity for people from ethnic minority backgrounds staff and students. This group will act as a working group within the Slade Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee (EDI), established in 2017.
• Created and implemented clear guidance and support for students has been created and implemented in Academic year 22/23: Sensitive content checklist of preparation of work and displaying of work in several/ all teaching spaces and Slade Protocol document for presentation of work and research. 

We are committing to: 

• To make transparent the UCL EDI policies for staff recruitment and ensure that searches for a diversity of staff are successful.
• To restructure the School and its curriculum so that we diversify our staff appointments and course content.
• To continue to diversify the range of visiting artists and speakers invited to the School and speakers at the Contemporary Art Lectures, through allowing diverse members of staff and students to request speakers from a range of industries and disciplines. 
• To support student-led initiatives including seminars, conferences, and publications that address issues of racial inequality.
• To make it mandatory that all staff engage in training on anti-racism and are aware of and are following UCL policies such as the Dean’s Race Equality Pledges, the active bystander training and the UCL Introduction to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion training.
• To involve all staff in implementing Slade specific and UCL EDI Policy for student recruitment and Widening Participation outreach and to follow the Equality Impact Assessment process and guidance from Advanced HE and UCL EDI.
• To ensure all staff from visiting practitioners, part-time, fractional posts, senior management, and governing body commit to diversifying the curriculum, including a wider presence of artists, writers and theorists addressing racism, prejudice, discrimination and colonialism.
• To ensure that the Slade offers safe and brave spaces so that people from ethnic minority backgrounds students are supported, heard and feel cared for.
• Building and encouraging accountability of interpersonal conflicts and safeguarding all students.
• To keep consistent newly enrolled students in Active Bystander Training.
• Workshops and seminars to be held cross college on Language, Terminology and Personal Characteristics.
• The Slade will consult with students about what we can provide in terms of brave spaces and accountability procedures to address experiences of inequality or discrimination.
• To timeline a series of town halls which are structurally implemented in the planning of the academic years to come, to encourage support for staff and students at the beginning of term and scaffold those through an equitable approach to anti-racist practice.
• To publish an annual report on the Slade’s widening participation, access, outreach and EDI initiatives.
• The Slade as a department will lead on these efforts and this process of change. No undue burden will be placed on those who identify as from a marginalised background or person of colour staff or students in doing this work.
• To acknowledge the ongoing shifts and changes in inclusive language and terminology and to foster these changes in a positive and structural way throughout the school.
• To bring forward a case for EDI in all committees as a standing item of communication and to keep this consistent.
• To support staff and students in being part of research groups on matters to do with anti-racism, where personal tutors and line managers allow those who would like to take part in the ongoing changes of the School to manage their time and support workload.
• To discuss the ongoing changes and developments in the Equality Act 2010 and create awareness of the developments to the entire school through effective communication.
