Janice Kerbel's project considered the status of drawing in relation to its history as a preliminary, or transitional medium. By working with tools and conventions of applied drawing, sources from a range of traditional and innovative media and disciplines, the questions of drawings' autonomy and its relation to an object - imagined, impossible or real - was explored.

Digital advancements in visualisation were experimented with alongside more traditional means of representation in an effort to imagine 'new' forms of allegorical and performative drawing. Works realised during this period included the Artangel project Nick Silver Can’t Sleep a radio play produced by BBC Radio 3.  Autonomously Drawn: The Aesthetics of Transition was an AHRC Fellowship in the Creative and Performing Arts.
