Mikhail Karikis studied at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL with avant-garde British architects Archigram and the Slade School of Fine Art with theatre director Philip Prowse, art theorist Norman Bryson and artist Lis Rhodes, where he completed his doctorate The Accoustics of the Self in 2006.

His doctoral research was a methodological experiment, which employed academic writing, music composition and art practice to explore notions of the 'self' through the study of voice and sound. This project, entitled The Acoustics of the Self: Discovering the Voices of the I was presented in two formats: a 400-minute-long audio-book and a fully illustrated text-book accompanied by two audio cds and a dvd with four short films. His interdisciplinary practice encompasses sound art, composition, performance, drawing and video. Mikhail's recent work explores ideas of difference and disarticulation with a particular focus on the role of voice in addressing these notions. His sound work is dedicated to sonic innovation and spans from gallery-based work to the fields of experimental vocal, electronica, avant-garde and folk music.
