Shailee Mehta
Shailee Mehta's artistic practice stems from an ongoing dialogue between the personal and the political through an extrapolation of memory and nostalgia into a larger context of history, mythology and contemporary society. Her work explores figuration, specially that of the coloured female body, with an operative agency that the long standing history of these mediums has largely excluded. Otherness takes form in either the political context of exclusion and disregard, or the mystification of it through mythology and superstitions. These structures overlap through familiar motifs of the public and the private, props and objects, that create a simulacra for self-referencing mythologies. The other-worldly weight, form and colour of the figures, their awkwardness, togetherness yet resignation towards their surroundings are all suggestive of this supposition of otherness.
Born in Indore (India, 1998), she completed her Foundation Diploma from UAL, London in 2015. She has been part of various group shows including STOMACH, Hoxton Arches Gallery (London 2017), AIRGENTUM Hoja de Ruta Residency (Spain 2018) and most recently, Space 118 (Mumbai, 2019). She has an upcoming solo show at The Residence Gallery that will be available to see in their gallery as well as an online viewing room.
