Easter Courses
Easter courses are taught by practising artists, many of whom studied at the Slade and also teach on the Slade Summer School. They are designed to enable students to develop a set of criteria which will enable further possibilities and developments within the wider remit of their own practise after completing the course.
Life Painting: one week sustained pose (in person)
Monday - Friday 10:00am – 4:00pm
31 March – 4 April / 5 days
Fee: £405
Course Tutor: Andy Pankhurst
Course Description
This course runs over 5 consecutive days. This course will give you the opportunity to work directly from a sustained life-model pose for the duration of the week. You will also explore the nature of sustained observation and concepts connected to it.
The course will begin with an initial introductory slide talk and then working collaboratively together with the model through a creative process exploring varying possibilities of poses, compositions and colour environments while making initial drawings.
Alongside demonstrations for the group, one to one tuition will be offered on the experience of a sustained visual exchange: perceptual shifts taking place between the artist & subject, colour mixing, tone & temperature, form and the role of structure in terms of proportion and spatial relationships. The final session of the week will be devoted to feedback and support for continuing after the course finishes.
Who should take this course?: suitable for varying levels of experience. From beginners to painters with an independent practice, some previous experience in drawing will be helpful.
Materials
Students will be sent a full materials list to purchase what is needed before the start of the course.
You will need to have the following materials for the first session:
A mixed set of student brushes including stiff/soft, as well as a ‘drawing’ brush- long and pointed such as a ‘rigger’ no 2
A glass jar with lid
Wet wipes for hands
Rags or paper towels for brushes
Palette knife for mixing
Paints: Ivory Black, Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Blue and Ultramarine Blue.

Observational Painting: Observation and Colour- Still Life Painting with Eye and Brain (in person)
Monday – Friday, 10:00am – 4:00pm
7 - 11 April / 5 days
Fee: £405
Course tutor: Kate Hopkins
Course Description
This course runs over 5 consecutive days. The course teaches strategies that inform observational painting. It is designed to help you set up and respond in more nuanced ways to a still-life practice, by offering further perceptual insights with the potential for inspiring new ideas.
You will learn: to carefully and effectively observe relationships between objects and the space they occupy; how to use colour to create illusions of light and form - a 'pictorial colour space'; and to consider colour relationships (perceived and on the palette), illusory edges and other phenomena.
In addition, you will develop your awareness of the surprising issues of our perception of size, shape and colour involved in still life painting. This practical course will reveal unexpected phenomena about how we perceive the world. Through daily practical painting exercises and talks, you will scrutinise scale, shape, tone and colour, and consider painting in the light shed by the psychology and neuroscience of vision.
Eye and Brain: This drawing and painting course is inspired by ‘Eye and Brain’ by Richard L. Gregory, explaining “how we see and what we see, including the strange phenomena of illusions” alongside more recent developments in cognitive neuroscience.
