Weekend Courses
Painting (ONLINE)
Saturdays, 10:00am – 1:00pm
£360
26 October - 14 December 2024 / 8 Saturdays
Tutors Ian Rowlands, Kate Hopkins, Sandra Smith
Course Description
This online course of eight Saturday morning sessions offers students the opportunity to explore the first principles of painting. The emphasis of the teaching is to look at painting as a means of articulating form and as a tool for expression and creative imagination.
The course explores the idea of perception as the starting point for visual enquiry and includes working from objects and secondary sources. Weekly sessions will be devoted to contemplating a particular set of formal issues, with special attention placed on colour and composition. Students can work with oils or acrylic.
The course concludes by addressing subjective colour and strategies for developing personal work. It is our aim that students leave the course with a set of criteria to explore ways of representing perceived objects and supporting them in thinking about how they might use these methods of working in conjunction with their own ideas.
These sessions will be practical and delivered by online live teaching, demonstration films and written material. The support material is designed to demonstrate the exercises as well as to help students think about further possibilities within the wider remit of painting that can be explored in their own time.
Who should take this course?
This course suits a cross-section of experiences from complete beginners to those who are more experienced but would like to re-engage with first principles in Painting. We recommend that students have a rudimentary knowledge of drawing in order to obtain maximum benefit from the course. If you have already taken our online Drawing course, this is an ideal follow-on.
How does the online teaching work?
Students will have access to our online platform (UCL Extend) with films explaining the ideas behind the exercises as well as demonstrations, how to set up the space, which materials to get ready and instructions for the exercises a week in advance of the live session. You will be sent links to these resources and to the live sessions.
An early start to the first live session will offer an induction showing you how to upload your work onto Padlet- a communal digital platform where the work can be displayed. Technical support is available throughout the course. Once logged in to the live session each evening will begin with an introduction, then students will be guided through the practical exercises and given feedback and advice by the tutor.
There will be PDFs to support the films that include the transcript, recommended reading material, plus some suggested exercises for progressing with the subject. Access to the films and supportive material will be available to the students for some months after the conclusion of the course.
Materials
Students will be sent a full materials list to purchase what is needed before the start of the course.
You will need to have the following materials for the first session:
- A mixed set of student brushes including stiff/soft, as well as a ‘drawing’ brush- long and pointed such as a ‘rigger’ no 2
- a glass jar with lid
- wet wipes for hands
- rags or paper towels for brushes
- palette knife for mixing
- Paint: Ivory black, Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Blue and Ultramarine Blue.
- We recommend that each student has a sketchbook.
- Please note: you will need a retarding medium for acrylics in order to stop them drying too quickly when colour mixing.

Tutors: Ian Rowlands, Kate Hopkins, Sandra Smith
Course Description
This course gives students the opportunity to explore core drawing skills. We will use drawing as a means of articulating form and as a tool for thinking, to encourage students to explore and nurture ideas through drawing and as inspiration for their own art practice.
Using the idea of perception as the starting point for visual enquiry, we will be working almost entirely from observation, though we will increasingly address individual ideas and compositions as the course progresses.
The five sessions will explore light and tone, space and line, measurement, proportion and drawing systems, materials and surface, and composition. Students will draw from old master paintings in one session. They will experiment with a variety of techniques and materials including pencil, ink, white chalk, willow and compressed charcoal.
