Andrea Canepa obtained a grant from the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca for a three-week stay in London to attend the Slade School of Fine Art. During her time at the Slade, she started the first phase of a project that she planned to develop through 2013.
The project involves the naming of streets after dates in the calendar, a custom that is particularly common in Latin America and Spain. Canepa intends to look at each of the streets, which correspond to a date in the calendar in Google Maps, and take a photograph of each one using Google Street View.
Google Street View is only available in Mexico, Brazil and some parts of Chile, so Canepa is also searching photographs uploaded onto Panoramio (an application for uploading pictures in Google maps at the locations where they were taken).
The next stage is to find out relevant events that occurred in place where the street is, on the date of the name of that street.
During the residence, Canepa made 14 drawings for the project. At the end of her residence she gave a presentation to postgraduate students, where she showed her drawings and an explanation of the concepts connected with them. This gave her the opportunity to test reaction to her project and receive useful feedback, especially in the context of the Slade’s educational model based on dialogue, critique and discussion.
